Statement from Families In Schools on Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s Resignation

Families In Schools (FIS) is deeply saddened by the news that Superintendent Alberto Carvalho will be leaving the Los Angeles Unified School District.

During his tenure, Superintendent Carvalho helped lead Los Angeles Unified through a period of significant recovery and progress. Under his leadership, the district improved student achievement following the pandemic, increased attendance, reduced chronic absenteeism, and maintained a relentless focus on helping students succeed. He challenged the system to move with greater urgency on behalf of children and demonstrated that meaningful progress is possible when schools, families, and communities work together around a shared commitment to student success.

We are especially grateful for Superintendent Carvalho’s recognition that families are essential partners in education. He consistently elevated the role of parents/caregivers as advocates, decision-makers, and leaders in their children’s learning. His willingness to listen to families and engage communities strengthened trust and helped create a more inclusive vision for public education in Los Angeles.

His leadership was perhaps most evident during some of the most challenging moments facing our city. At a time when immigrant students and families experienced fear and uncertainty, Superintendent Carvalho used his voice and position to affirm that all children deserve safe, welcoming schools where they can learn, grow, and thrive. His steadfast support for immigrant communities reflected the values that define Los Angeles and the very best of public education leadership.

While this news is heartbreaking and represents a significant loss for the students, families, and educators of Los Angeles, the work of improving educational outcomes for all children must continue. The progress made under Superintendent Carvalho’s leadership provides a strong foundation upon which we must build. As our Read LA! campaign reminds us, every child deserves the opportunity to read, learn, and thrive. We must continue to accelerate efforts to improve literacy outcomes, strengthen family-school partnerships, and ensure that all students—especially those furthest from opportunity—receive the support they need to succeed.

Earlier this month, Families In Schools was honored to recognize Superintendent Carvalho with our Courage in Leadership Award at our 25th Anniversary Benefit Gala—a reflection of his steadfast commitment to students, families, and communities, particularly during moments that called for principled and courageous leadership. We encourage those interested in learning more about his contributions to read the tribute prepared as part of that recognition. We are grateful for his partnership, leadership, and shared commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed.

FIS looks forward to partnering with the district’s next leader to continue advancing these priorities and building on the progress achieved over the past several years. Together, we must remain focused on creating an education system that prepares every child for success in school and in life.

We thank Superintendent Carvalho for his leadership, service, and unwavering dedication to the children and families of Los Angeles, and we wish him continued success in his next chapter.
